Weather at the finish city of Como at 1:50 PM, local time: 18C (65F), mostly cloudy, with the wind from the southeast at 4 mph (6 km/hr). There is a 4% chance of rain.

The Route: The route was changed on Friday, October 11. The race organizer posted this notice:

Due to heavy rains in recent days, which have caused landslides and flooding, the route and the finish in Como have undergone the following changes.

At km 37.5 the race, having passed the town of Cene, will turn towards Albino, and not Gazzaniga as per the original route, to tackle the Selvino climb from Nembro, which will replace the Passo di Ganda. The originally planned route will be resumed at km 57, after the climb of Selvino.

Due to the risk of flooding of Lake Como, the final part of the race will also be modified. The finish line will not be located on Lungo Lario Trento, but in Viale Felice Cavallotti, where the race will turn inside the last km.

The total distance of Il Lombardia will be 255 km.

The starting times remain unchanged, with the start meeting point and signature check from 9.00 to 10.30, lining up and city parade at 10.35, and the race start at 10.40.

The Race: Riders not starting: Jan Tratnik (Visma | Lease a Bike), Romain Bardet (Team dsm-Firmenich PostNL) & Stefan De Bod (EF Education-EasyPost). Bardet's team said he was ill.

This was the last race for Domenico Pozzovivo (VF Group-Bardiani CSF-Faizanè). This was his 16th time to race Il Lombardia, tying Davide Rebellin's record.

Here's the report from second-place Remco Evenepoel's Team Soudal Quick-Step:

Remco Evenepoel capped off an unforgettable season by finishing in the top three at Il Lombardia for the first time in his career. Soudal Quick-Step’s Belgian – who concluded third overall and won the white jersey at his Tour de France debut before going on to win two gold medals in Paris and another one at the Worlds in Zurich – put in a great ride Saturday afternoon, on the roads around Lake Como.

The podium, from left: Remco Evenepoel (2nd), Tadej Pogacar (1st) & Giulio Ciccone (3rd)

Despite coming at the start of the 255km Italian event without too much expectations after what has been a wearing season that has seen him rack up almost 60 days since February, Evenepoel produced a gutsy display from the moment the race was ignited on the brutal slopes of Colma di Sormano, with almost 50 kilometers to go. As Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates) opened a gap on the peloton, Evenepoel remained calm and rode his own pace together with two other riders, who he then quickly dispatched as soon as the descent began.

The 24-year-old continued to extend his gap on the undulating roads left until the finish, which included one more climb – San Fermo della Battaglia – and concluded a solid and impressive second, more than a minute ahead of the first chasers, a result that felt like a victory for Evenepoel, given his complicated history with Il Lombardia.

“I am happy to be on the podium today, it feels a bit like a personal victory. I didn’t have nice memories from the last time I raced Lombardia on the parcours from Bergamo to Como, back in 2020, but now to be the best of the rest makes me really proud. When the attacks came on the Sormano I just did my own pace, then on the descent I opened a gap and then embarked on a long time trial until the finish and made sure of giving my best. I am delighted I could do this race without any problems or bad luck, which is something that gives me confidence to come back and try to win it. It’s a nice way to end my season”, said Remco after signing off Soudal Quick-Step’s 50th podium in a Monument.

The moment everyone knew was coming. Pogacar attacks on the Sormano climb, 50 kms from the finish. The most immediate chasers are Evenepoel, Mas and Van Eetvelt The Belgian Olympic champion’s face has an expression somewhere between nervous and resigned. The feeling is that everyone has already figured out the race is practically over.
